What Burns More - Snow Shoeing or Cross Country Skiing After my last post on what burns more calories, downhill skiing or cross country skiing, I had a reader ask if snow shoeing burns more than both of them. Also, in that same post one of our ND readers quickly pointed out how great an activity snow shoeing is for you.

To tell you the truth I had no idea since they are both fairly intense winter sport activities. So, I did some research and looked up what each of them burn over a 3 hour period.

This is how the two activities match up over 3 hours:

Cross Country Skiing (5mph) – 2,250 calories in 180 minutes
Snow Shoeing – 1,800 calories in 180 minutes

As you can see from the results above, cross country skiing is still the winner in terms of calories burned!

*Caloric expenditures are approximations based on a 165 pound person over 180 minutes
