So just when you thought you were in the clear after the holidays, and you made your New Year's resolutions to lose weight, there comes another hurdle…Girl Scout cookies.

A recent blog post on Diets In ReviewGirl scout cookies reminded me that these cookies are both good and bad. The good is that they support a great organization, but the bad is the huge temptation they invite when they are in your house. Don't worry though, with these tips you can support the Girl Scouts, enjoy their cookies, and still stick to your weight loss goals for the year.

Everything in moderation. You've heard this time, and time again, on the ND blog and this applies to Girl Scout cookies too. Follow the serving size on the box and enjoy these delicious cookies a few time a week – you don't have to eat them every day.

Enjoy every bite of those cookies. Don't stick a whole cookie in your mouth and shovel it down. Take out a serving, place them on a plate, pour yourself a cup of tea (or coffee or skim milk) and take your time to eat your cookies.

Read the nutrition label. If you are counting calories for weight loss use the calorie count on the box to figure out how to incorporate the cookies into your daily plan. Remember if the serving is 4 cookies, and the calories are higher than you want, you can always have 2 cookies and still enjoy.

Order one box of your favorites. If you take the time to enjoy your cookies they will last a while. Avoid buying multiple boxes hoping they will last – that might be too much temptation for you to handle.

Don't forget to share. If you want to support the Girl Scouts, but not be temped by cookies in your house, you can purchase cookies but donate them – give them to friends, donate them to a shelter, or send them to the troops serving our country.
